There are four key elements to good fish-keeping. You need to ensure your fish tank is not over-crowded, that you do not feed your fish too much and that there is a good filter system in place and that regular water changes are made. Failure to maintain these elements in your aquarium can lead to diseased, and potentially; dying fish.

It is recommended to clean the inside of the tank once a week, and change 10 – 15% of the water with fresh dechlorinated water. A product such as Tetra Aquasafe will ensure the water is dechlorinated and safe to put in to your aquarium. It is not necessary to take accessories and decorations out when cleaning your aquarium. Not all bacteria in your fish tank are bad bacteria – some are needed to maintain a stable biological environment. Removing all bacteria, i.e. and bacteria found on your decorations, may disturb the fish tank’s ecological system.

If you find algae in your tank, you should use a scraper to remove the algae before changing the water. To change the water you can use a tool called a syphon such as the SuperFish Gravel Clean to remove some of the old water into another container. The container containing fresh water should be safe and with no household cleaning chemical residues left in it. The fresh water should be close to the temperature of the tank. When replacing your tank’s water, remember to leave a space between the top of the water and the aquarium to allow oxygen exchange to occur.

When cleaning your fish tank, removing your fish from the tank will most likely put them under stress, so it is best to avoid doing this if possible. Regular maintenance is particularly important if you do have a lot of fish in your tank. But smaller, less-inhabited tanks can be cleaned every 10 – 14 days. If you keep very large fish that consume larger volumes of food, you may need to change up to 50% of the water each time. Small aquariums and over-crowded aquarium in particular require much more maintenance, as a large fish tank offers a more stable environment for your fish.

Specific fish tank accessories such as SuperFish Crystal Max Filter Media is ideal for maintaining your tank’s natural filtration. Good bacteria colonise the pores on the media and remove toxic fish waste from the water as the water flows through it.
